Fish News from the Fraser River

A handful of stories related to fish and fishing on the Fraser River east of Vancouver, BC, have appeared in the past day or so. Here are the highlights:

The numbers of returning Fraser River sockeye salmon are low this year, according to the Vancouver Sun and CBC.ca. Questions about the viability of a commercial fishery this summer are raised, as are thoughts about the causes for the unexpected low count. High ocean water temperatures may be delaying the runs.

And, from the Associated Press (via Indigenous Intellectual Property Rights Yahoo Group) sports fishers on the Fraser River have been granted permission to fish along a 20 kilometer (12 mile) stretch of the river by the BC Supreme Court after the Cheam First Nation tried legal means to prevent sports fishing in what it considers its food fishing area.
