First Nations Film Festival at UCFV

The University College of the Fraser Valley is hosting “A Festival of First Nations films from the Pacific Northwest this weekend, April 21-23, in Chilliwack and Abbotsford. With apologies for the late notice, the festival looks great. There is a lineup of academic and aboriginal panelists and an opportunity to watch some of the old and new classic film depictions of Northwest Coast cultures. Films include:

In the Land of the War Canoes (Curtis, 1914)

Potlatch, A Strict Law Bids Us Dance (Wheeler; Umista Cultural Society, 1975)

Time Immemorial (Brody, 1991)

Blockade (Wilde, 1993)

Totem: The Return of the G’psgolox Pole (Cardinal, 2003)

The website provides synopses of these and other films and is a nice resource itself.

(Thanks, Jamie.)

For anyone interrested, there is a work of Edward Curtis in motion picture published on DVD. Its called, The Indian Picture Opera, and uses words and photos from Curtis to paint a picture of the Vanishing Race. It can be found on Amazon.
