Blogging and Tenure

Entertainment, technology, and legal blogger — and soon to be professor — Jeff Jarvis takes on the place of blogging in tenure reviews.

In response, I expect that if knew my posts were being considered directly for tenure, I would probably reference each one more heavily, post new ideas less frequently, and presumably blog less. (Maybe my feelings would change after I have finished my PhD, but I am not certain of that.) I’m sure some others would go the other way.

Academic publications tend to be heavily vetted before appearing in public. Blog posts are critiqued after they are in public. There’s a significant difference there, I think, and it is one that would affect how much comes out along with its tone and style.

(Thanks Rob)
