Special Edition of Scientific American

I’m always on the lookout for useful teaching materials for my first and second year courses. To that end, I am now working my way through the current Special Edition of Scientific American. Titled “Becoming Human: Evolution and the Rise of Intelligence,” the issue is devoted to recent research in biological anthropology. There are articles on topics like bonobo sexuality, diet and primate evolution, the development of intelligence, those ‘hobbits’ in Indonesia, and the emergence of language. There are a lot of good graphics too.

I find magazine issues like this very helpful for me when I have to lecture on (or respond to questions about) areas of anthropology outside of my specific expertise.
