Tsawwassen Treaty Not So Close?

Perhaps the Tsawwassen Treaty is not as close at hand as many had hoped. The weekend edition of The Province newspaper indicates that the handshake agreement between Canada, BC, and the Tsawwassen may be a limp handshake. Salmon fishing is at the centre of the problem.

Although details haven’t been released, it is known from an earlier agreement-in-principle that the Tsawwassen band will gain access to one per cent of the Fraser River salmon fishery. What isn’t known is how, under treaty terms, those fish will be harvested.

Questions about race-based fishing are back in play. The announcement of a treaty may be stalled as a result.
