Original Post

The Esquimalt and Songhees First Nations (Coast Salish; Greater Victoria area) have reached a settlement with the Canadian and BC governments over the land on which the BC Legislature sits. This land was promised to the native groups as a reserve by Governor James Douglas in 1854. Douglas rescinded the deal when it was decided to put the legislature on the site.
