Waiting for Word on the Lhiedli T’enneh Treaty Vote

Posted by Tad McIlwraith on March 30th, 2007 filed in History, Treaties

The Lheidlh T’enneh are voting today on their treaty agreement with BC and Canada.

In the first of what should be many articles this weekend and this upcoming month about relationships between natives and non-natives, treaties, and provincial history, theTyee.ca has launched a four-part series evaluating the Provincial Government’s efforts at reconciliation under the ‘New Relationship‘ with BC First Nations. The first part is available now. Titled ‘We Weren’t Supposed to Survive,’ journalist Sandra Shields spends considerable time in the Stó:lo communities (Coast Salish) near Chilliwack, BC, speaking with Stó:lo people about local history and attitudes towards native people. Shields’ argument: before reconciliation can occur, the BC public must come to a greater understanding about the native people and cultures that still exist in the province.

(And, as always, the reader comments are as provocative or disturbing as anything in the article.)
