Update: Tsawwassen Treaty (Partly) Ratified

Posted by Tad McIlwraith on November 6th, 2007 filed in Treaties

The Tsawwassen Treaty was ratified yesterday by the British Columbia legislature. Next step: ratification by the government of Canada.

Update

Apparently I’m not the only one that forgot that the Canadian system for passing laws requires three readings and three votes. From the Victoria Times Colonist:

The Tsawwassen treaty has not yet passed third reading in the B.C. legislature, contrary to what was reported in yesterday’s Times Colonist. Two pieces of legislation — the Final Agreement Consequential Amendments Act and the Treaty First Nation Taxation Act — have passed third reading. But a third, the Tsawwassen First Nation Final Agreement Act, still requires third reading and a final vote. That is expected to happen this week. All three bills will then require the formality of royal assent by the lieutenant-governor.
