Early History of BC Returns to Van. Sun

The third series in the Vancouver Sun’s coverage of early British Columbia history is now available. This set of articles is timed to coincide with the two hundredth anniversary of Simon Fraser’s explorations of British Columbia. (2008 is also the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of the colony of British Columbia.) Steven Hume, the Sun’s history journalist, who’s coverage of First Nations topics and issues I appreciate greatly, retraced Simon Fraser’s travels through British Columbia. Hume’s journey provides the basis for many of the articles.

In this series, the impact of smallpox on Sto:lo people is covered, as is Simon Fraser’s arrival at the Pacific Ocean. A bibliography of sources on Fraser River history and anthropology is also provided. Not surprisingly, the entire collection of articles is a terrific resource for students and teachers of BC history.

I blogged about this feature last year, when the second series of articles was published.
