Pine Beetle Epidemic Over?
Posted by Tad McIlwraith on March 25th, 2008 filed in Forestry
CKNW radio (Vancouver) and CBC.ca report today that the Pine Beetle is moving on from BC to Alberta. The epidemic in BC is over. Why? Because the pine beetle has run out of trees to consume. Scary.
(Of course, just because the bugs have stopped chewing doesn’t mean that the effects stop being felt. Communities throughout north-central BC will feel the impact of bug kill for years to come.)
PS … from the Globe and Mail.

Run out of food? The trees that were attacked are still there, and for every dead or dying tree there’s at least one which hasn’t been attacked. B.C. is still covered with millions of pines. So why is this so-called “expert” telling us that the beetles have run out of food? This is not a news story, it’s just more industry propaganda.

TA … I was hoping someone would pick up on this and ask this question. I last traveled through north-central BC in February and saw stands of green pines. I wonder as you do.
What’s the goal of this kind of propaganda? Why would the ‘industry’ want us to believe that the epidemic is over?
